Disney's Hollywood Studios opened in 1989 as Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park, and was the third park to open at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Built to replicate the dual movie-studio/theme-park purpose of Universal Studios Hollywood (and Universal's Florida resort which was opening in 1990), it included many movie making elements, including a full working backlot with accompanying tour.

The park quickly had to open up some of the backlot areas to support the crowds. However, the park failed to take off as a credible studio, leaving the tour lacking much to view. Eventually, after many revisions, the backlot was fully replaced with Star Wars and Toy Story themed lands.

It is one of the most redeveloped Disney parks, and therefore makes for an interesting timeline map, from the initial day in May 1989, right up till 2024.
